Skylla is a "huge and monstrous" sea/sea monster who's "den" is on the side of a mountain "no mortal man could scale" (212, 211). Kirke is warns Odysseus not to fight her, and tells the "old contender" not to "have battle in [his] heart" (213, 212). When Odysseus and his crew finally come to Skylla, Odysseus doesn't tell his men about her until they come as close as possible to her, and she "whisk[s] six of [his] best men from the ship" (217). Losing these men is a big misfortune for them, but they "rowed on" (218).
