Phêmios performs narrative songs for the Ithakans. He appears in book I as he is ordered to sing when, "A herald gave a shapely cithern harp to Phêmios, whom they compelled to sing…" (6). He plays and sings many adventures, but he preforms mainly for the suitors. His entertainment primarily comes after the suitors have feasted and are eager for dance and song.
